The Brain Gremlin Project
| Below are some comparison shots to show the difference between the resin model detail and the action figure (the best reference I have). I have tried to put them in the same position. |
| Above: note the difference in arm positions. The arms on the resin model are actually sort of stuck that way. On the plus side, modifications can be hidden under the coat. I'd like to put him in a tight jersey t-shirt to match the movie so that the abdomen shows. |
| The positions are a little different here. Note that the ears on Mohawk are much larger. I am ok with this. There are several differences in the face, which I will discuss in close up shots below. |
| The feet as seen from the top are pretty much the same. There are differences in, but that's just something that I'll live with of course. |
| The legs from the side. You'll see Mohawk has more wattle and spikes on the side. His legs are also thicker than Brain's, but we'll ignore that. Note that the legs are exposed, so detail is sort of important. |
| Another view of the legs, sort of from the back. I think the spike on the farthest back leg is broken on the tip. I'd like to repair it. Notice again the spikes on the back of the upper leg and the wattle on the lower leg. (The foot is fine as is.) |
| Now we run into trouble. The heads are quite different, particularly the nose and the eyes. Because this is the essence of the character, these are things I want fixed. The difference in the structure of the head around the eyes and the snubness of the nose are part of what makes the Brain Gremlin look more "friendly." Notice also the spikes on the sides of the face at the bottom. Mohawk's spikes are particularly large near the back. These also have to be fixed. |
| Again, note the differences in the eyes and the spikes around the back of the jaw. Brain has more smaller spikes than the Mohawk model has. Brain has much larger eyes and they stick out at the sides rather than folding around the back of the head like Mohawk. Mohawk also has that large wattle and his chin doesn't protrude as much. (They liked that wattle on Mohawk - I have already removed some of that from the arms and carved in details there to match the existing arms.) |
| Another photo showing differences in spikes, chin, eyes and
wattle.
| Below are some photos of the actual animatronic Brain Gremlin - the one that could talk. It was auctioned in December of 2008 and I sure wish I had known about that. Of course, it sold for $13K, so maybe I don't wish as much as I think... |

There is a sad lack of Gremlin photos, specifically photos from the movie Gremlins 2. This may not sound like a crises to you, the average computer user, but it is for me. See, I have a dream...a dream of creating a full size Brain Gremlin model with moving joints and everything. (For the uninformed, Brain Gremlin is the one that talks with Tony Randall's voice in Gremlins 2.) I have discovered a place to buy the model of Mohawk the Gremlin (the nasty one with spikes from G2). I have discovered countless pages describing how to work with, modify and paint vinyl models. What I have not found is many photos of Brain G, and so those that I have are precious. |
